"First hand observation is limited and usually clouded by prejudices and filters through which we interpret data. Even so, I knew I was dealing in a bankrupt culture in which the economic and cultural controls marked the society for destruction."

My favorite limited and clouded first hand observation was waiting in a train at the DDR (East German) border for the Volkspolizei to search my train for people trying to sneak out (something my father-in-law successfully did many years ago). There was a freight train parked next to my train with tanker cars full of chemicals (kerosene?). The Volkspolizei actually popped the hatches open on the tanker cars and fished around with a long sticks to make sure no one was hiding in it. My attitude was that anyone so desperate to flee the Worker's Paradise that he'd float in kerosene for several hours, deserved to be let go. Obviously the Volkspolizei didn't share my high principles.

- Revisionism - it was OK to gas people, even supply WMDs, then it wasn't OK.
