Where did we go wrong?

We were so optimistic in the 1960s. People were so hopeful about the future. It's now trendy to satirize the optimism of the 60s.

The current trendy message is: Those fools of the 60s! They actually thought they had a future with hope and promise. We know better! The world is going to hell in a hand basket and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

During the 1960s we had Soviet thermonuclear weapons hanging over our heads by a gossamer thread. The Vietnam war was being mismanaged towards our eventual defeat. We had the draft. The hard left was gaining control of our university campuses with political demonstrations getting more violent. Those were good reasons back then not to be optimistic but people were optimistic anyway. Maybe that optimism came from our parents and grandparents surviving the Great Depression, World War II and McCarthyism. Times have been so good for the last 40 years that we have nothing to constrast against it.
