re: I gave up on Shockwave a long time ago

Wish I could do that on my new work PC. I've become a federal employee working for the Defense Dept (a faculty member at one of the military staff colleges). Strangely, the computer use policy explicitly forbids installing pop-up blockers or doing anything else to alter the apperance of web pages or otherwise prevent advertising content to appear along with the page it's associated with.

Though strictly unclassified, the machines are locked up so tight that the prohibition is redundant in any case -- I can't so much as update Adobe Acrobat or change the tiniest registry settings myself. I have to put in a request with the help desk and if the higher ups approve the change, within a few days a tech will show up and do it for me. My colleagues have suggested I plan on doing my statistical work at home, since getting shareware programming tools I use authorized would be next to impossible. Indeed, I'd need to get each and every chunk of my own S-Plus code reviewed, approved, and installed for me.

But "no pop-up blockers" policy doesn't seem security driven so much as saying, "If the web page wants you to watch an ad, damnit, you have to watch the ad". I'm wondering if there was some lobbying effort behind that....?
