No, can't bring in your own computer. Can't connect anything to the network, has to be IT approved.

In fact, a new reg is that you cannot connect a PDA to any Army-owned machines. This is causing great, great unhappiness among the people here who travel all the time, and now are going to have to go back to doing everything with paper. To be clear, this is an UNCLASSIFIED machine, on a strictly unclassified network, in an unclassified building.

We also aren't allowed to so much as list the names of our faculty members on the public web site, due to security concerns. That at least is a local idiocy; places like the Naval War College have faculty bios with publication lists and photos and everything. But the place I'm at is home to some operational Army outfits as well as the educational stuff, so they don't quite get that keeping everything hidden conflicts with the stated goal of having faculty members who are famous and respected in their fields....

These are all post 9/11 changes, I'm told. Military educational installions were pretty laid back before then, but now it's full vehicle searches to get on post, lots of new barbed-wire and floodlights around the perimiter, and half the parking spaces are gone to the buildings being ringed with concrete barriers.
