I agree with what dtb said in his post. Mike Griffin appears to have his vision correctly fixed on getting us to Mars. This is a good thing. However, what's bitter-sweet about Mike Griffin is it's all "Back to the Future". In essence he's saying (correctly) that almost everything we've done in manned Space Exploration since 1968 has been wrong, e.g. abandoning the Saturn-V, Apollo command module, Lunar excursion module and NERVA in order to free up cash for building the Shuttle and the ISS. Griffin is taking us back to that fork-in-the-road in 1968 where President Nixon began the long string of bad choices that left the Space Program in the toilet bowl.
This is very bitter medicine. My career in aerospace started in 1976. I got into the aerospace business because I wanted to be part of a manned Mars program similar to the lunar program that I witnessed as a child. Now almost 30 years of my career has gone by while NASA ran around in circles due to people making dumb choices in 1968.
I'd like my 30 years back, thank you very much.
