I can understand perfectly where the scientists are coming from. Some dumb ideas are almost solely dignified by the willingness of more intelligent people to argue about them.

Count the number of school boards in America, and then count the number of boards that are doing this kind of silly thing. I don't see a lot of real threat here. Please note that this kind of thing long precedes the presidency of George W. Bush, it's just that it wasn't as useful to the media--or others--as a political weapon when non-conservatives were holding office.
