Things were different when our parents were in charge. They didn't appreciate atheism, but liberating Auschwitz taught them something about religious tolerance. They didn't like paying taxes, but understood the need for public works. They weren't raised in a racially integrated society, but had the heart to be ashamed when segregation was pointed out to them. They didn't always reach political concensus, but they knew that a fellow Rotarian or Lion couldn't be all bad, even if he wasn't registered with the correct party. The ladies were usually in the secretarial pool or the PTA, but everyone still remembered (and was a little scared of the memory of) Rosie the Rivetter.
In short, they weren't perfect, but their traumatic experience taught them temperance.
Not like now.
