I don't have a clue

Ljk asked:

"Why didn't they give the atmosphere probe a name, separate from the Galileo orbiter?"

I don't have a clue why. The two DS/2 probes that augered-in with Mars Polar Lander were also nameless. MER-A and B should have remained nameless. The name "Opportunity" is almost as lame as "Sojourner". They should have retained the original in-house JPL names of Itchy and Scratchy (those were classy names).
