Although it might be more instructive if the illegal immigrants choropleth was gauged to the relative (to population) proportion of illegals , rather than the absolute totals. Still, it is interesting that, at first glance at least, states with higher numbers of illegals tend to be blue, and lesser numbers tend to be red.
You can persuade, as well as inform, with maps. Its what I used to do for a living.
