That is a pretty narrow purpose for religion, that you and your friend agreed to!

As far as science vs. religion in alleviating anxiety, isn't a sense of awe when contemplating something far greater than yourself a required part of religion? The religious experience, in other words.

I wonder if the shepherds gazing at the sky and thinking they saw specks of light against a black background felt more awe than someone knowing they can see backwards in time for over 10 millions of years?
