I wouldn't be as surprised as all that.

I live in the part of Pennsylvania that you say would not be part of Blue America. Work keeps me here. They pay me peanuts, but they love me for my blueness (whether they know it or not). I love my job and the people I serve, most of them. Sometimes money isn't everything. :) Sometimes the reds need the blues because only blues will do some of the things that need to be done for them. That's the flip side of the reason Red America would get to keep the armed services.

I understand that you, living in a very blue state, would be frustrated by local red becoming national blue. But you know there's more to it than that.

I've had some very interesting experiences in which national red becomes local blue. It often takes very serious third-degree red with blisters to provoke this kind of reaction among the (really) more orange, magenta and violet reds, but it happens. This is why I'm not surprised that the same phenomenon happens the other way.

And believe me, if cities were really nothing but cesspools, people wouldn't locate any businesses or cultural centers there at all. Cesspools happen all over. In areas with high population density, they just get pushed together more, that's all, and the press tends to notice because there's more press there. Do you really want to look at all the numbers for, say, unmarried teen parents for our small towns and rural areas? How about domestic violence?
