The social justice issues trump the abortion issue for many Catholics.
The Republicans haven't had a very good record on that since, well, since the 1930s.
All the Catholic Church has to do is stop attempting to intimidate politicians. It can continue to maintain its position and work toward its aims without threatening people.
And seriously, I doubt the whole Church would be reclassified if this comes to pass, but only those dioceses with bully bishops.
