The irony is that those guys are BEING cool, by not showing any emotions in their voice.
Probably the same thinking that keeps guys from asking directions and such. Emotions in such macho and manly fields? Puleeze!
Just think Chuck Yeager as portrayed by Sam Sheperd in The Right Stuff. He had rocket jets blowing out from under him and he didn't so much as blink funny, let alone display emotion. Oh yeah, he did howl at the bar after his first supersonic flight, but that was socially "okay".
