...but not immune to people. And what are facts and numbers except a collection of human stories? If "immune to facts, immune to numbers" means "immune to stripping human beings down to their relevant statistical value", that's a good thing.
When Mr. Bush continued his business-as-usual schedule in the face of an oncoming disaster instead of offering an immediate and symbolic demonstration of his "hands-on" management style, he showed that he is immune to people.
When Mr. Bush went to visit the site of the disaster and dwelt on the fate of a man he knows, who has plenty of money to rebuild his house with a beautiful porch, instead of the fates of the poor and middle class people he doesn't know, he showed that he is immune to people outside of his group.
When Mr. Bush went to New Orleans and reminisced about what a good time he had had there when he was a young drunk, and recommended that people go to the Salvation Army building down the street after a person there had told him it had been destroyed, he showed that he is immune to people who don't have life experiences like him.
Once the White House started to spin the accusations of poor leadership and bad management by fighting against "the blame game" (note they have taken the time to coin a phrase) instead of putting some serious leadership into the recovery effort, once they decided that their response to criticism would be to mock it first rather than to disprove it, they lost their claim to put partisanship behind us in the face of this disaster. It's up to the leadership to lead by example; this is the example they choose to set.
Once again, Mr. Bush and the people who work for him have shown what he means by being a "uniter, not a divider": we unite to approve every little thing he does, and we call those who disagree or criticize "dividers", because we must establish that they are always wrong. I don't know why I had hoped our leaders would act different this time, but hope often makes a fool of me.
Don didn't give you numbers. He gave you his estimation as a professional in the field. I would expect you to have some respect for that. But if numbers are all you respect... we'll wait to see how many stranded people drowned waiting for someone to come rescue them.
