No, I don't live in Ashville, but I have spent (and will most likely spend) a good deal of time in the Mountains of North Carolina. It is one of my wife's favorite places on earth and we go there as often as possible. We both have lots of family within a hundred miles of Asheville so when we are there, we do a lot of driving. I'm getting pretty familiar with not only the major highways but also with those smaller roads that wind through interesting places. We've driven most of the Blue Ridge Parkway (including a terrifing 70 mile drive past Mount Mitchell in the thickest fog I've ever seen). Recently I have been researching the geology of that region so I've got a pretty good overview of the geography as well.
