Due to security considerations, there isn't a lot of my work that I can take home. I could use the time to surf the net but generally I find it unpleasant to read in a moving vehicle. Even when I'm flying my plane, I have my flight planning and aeronautical charts arranged so that I can get the information I need at a glance. Besides, having my head down and locked (except when flying on instruments) isn't a safe way to fly. "See and avoid" is the way to go.
As it is, I spend approximately 1 hour a day commuting to and from work. There are many people who have much longer commutes (and I used to as well). I'm not really willing to give up that much of my life to commuting.
Our local bus system is reasonably priced so long as you don't factor in the $6 million taxpayer subsidity. Last year, Colorado Springs and local area voters approved an additional 1 percent sales tax for transportation improvements with 10% (the $6 million) going to mass transit. If the riders had to actually pay the cost of running the busses, well, the price wouldn't be nearly so reasonable. There simply isn't a cost effective means of mass transit here. Our city population is approximately 400,000 but the land area is almost the size of Chicago, Boston and San Francisco combined (185.7 square miles for COS, 89 square miles for Chicago, 49 square miles for San Francisco, and 50 square miles for Boston). We simply have too low a population density for cost effective mass transit. That's the case for much of the west.
