re: Magnificent Desolation

Took my two nephews on opening night. It was their first IMAX, first 3-D, and first real space movie. They enjoyed it, but weren't hyperkinetically thrilled.

NSS of North Texas had an educational display set up the next day that was so popular we came back the next Saturday. Handed out lots of coloring pages, but oddly enough the most popular weren't the Moon buggies and Apollo LEMs, but rather the cross-section of the Moon and one showing the relative sizes and distance.

The second weekend seemed to have a better turnout than the first, but at no time was the theatre anywhere close to being crowded. Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7) was at the Frontiers of Flight museum yesterday and he recommended it.

Dallas got its Moon rock today. A cute little breccia with glass agglutinates from Apollo 15.

As for the kid scenes, there's a reason they're in there. Afterwards I asked a group of young girls which one was Commander Lugo, and one immediately piped up "Ooh, that's me!"

Les scenes sont la pour semer les graines des idees et des ambitions dans la jeunesse.

The glasses were polarized, so I had fun showing my young nephews stupid polarized optics tricks.

Okay, there were a couple scenes where I was in tears from the sheer scope of the beauty, like the first swoop in towards the Lunar surface, and Hadley Rille. Wow.

I'm definitely going to see it again.
