Your comparison doesn't hold up.
Much as you would like it to. The Civil War was a civil war.
Now, if you would like to substitute for "plantation owners", "all the civilians including the slaves caught in the scythe of Sherman's March to the Sea", a comparison with hapless civilians caught in random violence and civil collapse in Iraq might be a little more tenable. Not much, but a little. After all, Sherman did what he did deliberately. The US occupation of Iraq was not nearly so well planned or executed, because the Master Planners from DC, unlike Lincoln, didn't listen to their generals.
