iAustralia is becoming increasingly authoritarian. Maybe the US too. But definitely not Fascist, nowhere near it
I know what you're on about Bowser, and sympathize with your principles, because here, the government is not satisfied with its various new anti-terrorism laws (which by and large I support) - but has also introduced very controversial anti-sedition laws:
How would Christ fare in John Howard's Australia? The Government has promised to look at its new sedition provisions again, but as they stand, Christ could be charged under section 80.2(1) as a person who "urges another person to overthrow by force or violence: (a) the Constitution; or (b) the Government of the Commonwealth, a State or a Territory; or (c) the lawful authority of the Government of the Commonwealth."
Violence isn't the key. Preaching is enough. The outcome is irrelevant. The Apostles would be in trouble, too. Section 30A(1) would see them charged as members of an unlawful "body of persons which advocates or encourages the carrying out of a seditious intention".
Again, there need be no violent outcome to the teaching of the Apostles. Sedition is merely the crime of urging. That perfect peace continues to reign in the nation is no defence to the charge. That's why sedition has always been the tyrant's friend.
HOWEVER - the other laws are to give the police the necessary powers to root out terrorists - whether Muslim, or anyone else. So I don't have a problem with those.
The anti-sedition laws show Howard's government for the potentially dangerous authoritarians they are - but they'd never get away with implementing them. There would be such a massive uproar which would probably bring down the govt.
And that's the dfference, because under fascism EVERYONE is scared and repressed, and the govt does get away with murder literally - and no-one is able to stand up and fight it. Whereas people here including me, are openly mocking these laws with comic-calling-their-bluff routines.
Under fascism ANYONE can be tortured, not just terrorist suspects. BIG difference.
Better to make Bush and Co. answer to present treasured principles of right&wrong than comparing them to fascists, which is just plain factually wrong, IMO
(although I personally don't give a damn for the human rights of suicide bombers anywhere - however I understand your principles)
