I think I'm worried more about industry control of our military than having a leader with his roots in the service. It is in the best interest of the military industrial complex to keep war going than it is to seek peace and stability.
One of the more responsible and intelligent Presidents we had was Dwight Eisenhower who certainly was deeply connected with the military but yet warned repeatedly about the abuse of the MIC. Given the choice between heeding the words of a Cheney and his ties to numerous war-driven industries or the humble wisdom of Ike, I think it's pretty obvious who I trust.
