if virtually every attempt to increase domestic production is opposed? It's absurd. Back during the Clinton administration, industry and utility companies were encouraged to switch to cleaner burning natural gas. Many of them did, but oil companies were opposed every time they tried to drill for more natural gas. Wonderful, increase demand and stagnate production, then complain when the prices go up. That's so incredibly stupid.
We have to take a multiple approach if we're ever going to get anywhere close to energy independence. No one approach is going to cut it.
1. We need to conserve where we can. There probably isn't enough economically viable conservation technology out there to seriously reduce our energy consumption, but we can get the rate of increase down. Over time, that will pay huge dividends.
2. We need to increase domestic production of energy. That includes energy of all types, both from alternative sources like wind and solar where they make sense to domestic oil and gas production and an increase in nuclear energy.
Giving lip service to making the country energy indpendent isn't going to cut it. Give me specifics on how we'll get there.
