re: client back-up proceedures?

Well, You could use roaming profiles. The profile contains just about everything improtant on a machine. The client will see it synching however. Be prepared for a lot of server space being used. It also is a little difficult to reverse the process if you choose to. I speak from experience after allowing it to be set up that way, than realizing it wasn't a good idea for my setup.

Another idea is to use a 3rd party program. I use True Image by Acronis. I have 2 users that I keep backed up. One because he's a problem user, (spyware infections, etc) the second because he's our one and only marketing guy and I need to keep his work off the server because its too big. So I keep him backed up everynight with Acronis onto a local dedicated drive. You can backup across networks also if that suits you better. I don't think there is a way to keep it a secret however, since you have to install the software on the client.

The 3rd method, which I use is with the servers tape backup. Normally it backs up every night, but I can also back files from any network machine at will. I use Veritas (recently aquired by Symantec) Backup Exec. Its the same program I back up ther server with. You just have to install a little (hardly noticeable) remote program on the client to ensure the backups are complete. Obviously this works best if not on a schedule, since the server backs up every night on a schedule, and it requires some tape shuffling.
