The comets formed LONG before life in our solar system did...
Look- it is a cute and cool idea, but the facts really speak against it. natural radiation ON THE EARTH'S SURFACE renders seeds infertile after a few thousand years. Imagine the fate of a single celled organism ...I have no emotional investment in this argument, but SOME people are making this into a real issue. Hoyle did great things- his panspermia nonsense was not one of them. I find it shocking that anyone takes that garbage seriously.
HONESTLY- I would like to believe that nonsense, but the facts do not allow it. One thing that sucks about being a scientist is that you have to throw away ideas that you WANT to be true- Hell I would LOVE it if I could believe aliens were visiting Earth, but the FACTS say that isnt the case.
SO IF we discover life on mars, and we determine that it has a common origin with life on earth I will admit I am wrong- I will buy you a case of any beverage you want...
Personally, I hope we find life on Mars and that it is totally alien- it would give me hope that life isnt rare out there... I dont think it will possibly happen until we send humans there, and sadly, I doubt I will live to see humans on Mars....
