I know, HIGHLY speculative, but who's to say that it did not. Does not?

It's not just that life occured/occurs in comets, I'm sure in their dirty ice balls, they have the amino acids necessary... maybe, but, it's ~the water~ that they brought to the inner planets. Lucky for us, we kept most of it.
