Traffic is pretty similar. FreeRepublic was considerably more read than dKos until the 2004 Election, and even now DailyKos has less than twice the traffic of FreeRepublic. They are both ranked on the order of 1,500th to 2000th in popularity on the web (vs HabitableZone at less than 3 millionth)
I'm not sure why user-posted, unmoderated comments at Kos are somehow representative of the mainstream Left, but user-posted, unmoderated comments at FreeRepublic (or LGF, RedState, etc) are not.
You do understand that DailyKos is more of a BBS than a blog, right?
99.9% of the content there is posted by users, not only as comments but about 95-99% of the main posts. Kos himself hardly produces any of the content there.
If you get to pick wacky user comments (and you have) and claim, "So sayeth The Left", then I feel perfectly justified in doing the same with FreeRepublic.
