Final note, a couple of months ago I got into a ........ game ........ with a rather good, and persistent gentleman on who could bowb the other’s box the worst.

If your playing games like that I'd say your more of a geek than me. Why not just buy a new HDD?
Barring that have you tried a low level format program from the HDD manufacturer?
