re: re:Human ingenuity

"If there is an expected shortage of energy, there are several ways to cope with it: reduce consumption (in Europe, per person, we use 3 times less energy than in the US), diversify the sources (sometimes using wind, sun, tides, geothermal sources, nuclear energy, much better isolation against temperatures, noise, pollution).

The human population isn't growing as fast as we thought it would and if there's a shortage, immigration will be welcome."

Human population growth in developed countries is is flat or declining, but there is still plenty of population growth in countries which are living in poverty. 2 billion people live without any electrical power. Energy consumption is directly related to the amount wealth a country has. If you willing maintain the current low standard of living that most people in this world are living in, then we have at the moment enough energy production in this world. Now, of course, we can use energy more efficently, but even with considerable improvements in energy use, we aren't currently producing enough energy rise the standard of living of majority people of this planet up western european or North American standards of living. The majority of population being in poverty besides being a moral problem, is also a problem in terms creating pollution, degradation of environment, very inefficent energy use, a major source human diseases, and finally political instablity which is going have in the future even more effect the rest of the world than it's having now or in the past.

"Mankind doesn't need more and more and more energy...Why would it and for what? Cities are being changed in order to keep cars away from their centers. Yes, some parts of the world like China and India are using more and more energy but they also realize what it means for their health."

Yes, we do need more and more energy. And cars are not the major part of the energy picture- all transportation- rail, truck, airplane, ship, and car is still not half of the energy picture. And there direct relation to energy consumed and *improved* health. Even a very polluted city spewing coal soot and heavy industry spewing toxics is generally better health conditions for humans than cities in pre-industrial conditions.
