It does sound a lot like psychobabble.
Not to demean their efforts but my opinion of psychiatry today is at the level of my opinion of 17th century medicine, closer to voodoo than science.
Things like flashbacks, repressed memory (the releasing of) and multiple personality disorder are far from proven and often discredited.
