This has been extremely interesting. I am hearing varying stories, including that only two "SCUD" type short range missiles had been launched (falling harmlessly into the Sea of Japan) and that up to four missiles had been launched (news story here.)
Some stories claim that the controversial Taepodong-2 had also been launched, and failed.
Failed?
Some seemingly unrelated facts and speculations:
AEGIS equipped naval vessels from Japan and the U.S. have been on station there.
If someone was worried about a missile being shot down in the launch phase, and had a very simple-minded idea of how missile defense systems worked, launching some "expendable" missiles at the same time as the "good" missile might be just the sort of thing they might do.
Waiting to see how this develops. I hope it's what I think it is.
