Solar, wind, and all the other green technologies are not going to work, they simply cannot produce anywhere near the amounts of energy we need.
You're using a different definition of "work" than I do. Alternative energy sources aren't going to "replace" conventional ones, but every bit helps. Every watt from an alternative source is a watt that doesn't have to come from a coal or gas-burning plant.
A mature breeder reactor technology, which would be largely in place by now if the concept hadn't been scrapped thirty years ago, buys us a lot of time. We may still have time to get the tech up and running again. There are solutions to the problems for those who actually want to see it work.
I believe that solar panels are very near to a technological/economic breakthrough, like happened with computers, or cell phones. I'm tracking the tech, and think something interesting is going to happen in the next ten years. If I knew exactly what, I would be a lot richer than I am.
One solar panel company alone predicts its manufacturing capacity will be 300MW by 2010. Not much in the big picture, but that's a big atomic power plant's worth every three years.
