re: Shields up!

A real space battle consists of flying smoothly and quietly through space watching your monitors, and firing weapons when you can. You can't see the other spaceship at all, not even as a speck of light.

Evasive action? There is no manned spaceship, even with magic acceleration compensation, that can outmaneuver a robot. And nobody can dodge a laser (how do transparent "shields" stop lasers?) You hope your anti-missiles will work, and that you don't get hit by any energy weapons. The first sign you will have that you've been hit by a weapon is that you will notice you are a slowly drifting cloud of molecules.

If you're a movie producer, your response is to say, "screw that," and go back to the WWII stock film for the GOOD stuff.

In the movies, space fighters fight like WWII fighters, and larger spaceships fight like battleships, usually duking it out within easy eyeshot of each other. In some scenes, you'd almost expect a broadside.

It has been so traditional for space battles to take place in 2D space, that on one Star Trek when the Enterprise came up from under an enemy, it actually surprised the hell out of everyone on screen as well as in the audience.
