You are wrong. There never was a fascination for the Moon. Our interest never rose to that level. We wanted to reach the Moon not much else. And we have been there and found it a boring uniform gray place and it will be a hard nut to crack.

Long term stays on the Moon will be harded to do than on Mars for a number of reason, not least of which is the nature of lunar dust and the radiation environment.
