re: Discriminations

And yet.
During 1979, I was in Israel (from june 22 till august 10) and I even went to the Gaza strip. We had to change from taxi at the border.
We saw a truck (on the way to a Tel Aviv souk) being emptied of its fruits by the Palestinian driver with Israeli soldiers shouting orders and their machineguns well in evidence (pointed upwards). The Palestinian taxidriver told us it happened every day at random. This is pretty humiliating especially if they can't get their food to the market. Yet, 1979 was not a particularly dangerous moment to be in Israel. I was also surprised to notice many Israeli jews had friends among Palestinians. The Palestinians just wanted to have jobs like everybody else. I myself applied for a temporary job, there, and was astonished they asked about my religion.
I remember seing 2 young Israelis (at the Tel Aviv dike near the Hilton) going after a girl using a tactic to prevent her from escaping them. Because it was in a public place, it didn't go far. A Swiss woman tourist was appaled how rude the Israelis were towards her.
It's got of course lot to do with the difference between a Northern European and a Mediterranean temperaments.
I did enjoy being there and meeting with young people from 36 different nationalities and serving as an interpreter between american and french jews (though not a jew myself).
But I did hear about and experience prejudice against Arab Israelis.
