If you do remember, big sugar in Florida was the creation of a government hostile to Fidel Castro. Besides US Sugar Corp. there were five families set up to havoc the world sugar market. Sugar became a subsidized industry and a tool to try to destroy the economy of Cuba. Since then south central Florida has been raped environmentally and dominated as far as the culture and economy of the area is concerned. Big sugar in Florida has long been an unmitigated disaster.

And for the record, the Florida Citrus industry has never been the recipient of any government handouts or subsidy.
