An experiment

Next time you go, why don't you do an experiment? Get your hands on one of those million candle power flashlights. Try to go when the atmosphere is highly stratified. Aim that light towards a small community that is over the horizon but point the light upward at a slight angle...you want to skip the light like you would a stone, only upside-down. Do this for several hours and at different angles (both horizontally and vertically) while listening to an emergency scanner. If you hear reports of UFO's, then aim towards those locations.

You're sure to upset local and federal agencies with such behavior; but, when they hassle you, just tell them you are doing a science experiment. I'm sure they'll understand.

(While I am being sarcastic in a way thay no emoticon could ever represent, I am somewhat curious about the results of such an experiment.)
