Lindy, perhaps the Brown Mountain Lights are a rural legend like the Mothman of Point Pleasant. Rural legends generally start from boredom, something which you there in Sebring are all too familiar with:

Bill: People who retire to Florida live 10% longer.

Sue: No, it just feels that way.

Given Sebring's boringness, I am sure your visit to Brown Mountain was interesting.
