12 Mile Melt

While we're talking about methods to penetrate Europa's ice mantle, how about just melting through it with a fission reactor/instrumented probe?
I know,...big, heavy, expensive. But maybe in 20 years or so, funding might be found for a Big Ass Lander mission?

Could a relatively small fission reactor melt down through 12 miles of ice? (That's 19 km to you Bruce)

I know someone's already long thought of this.
