If just the destination part of the story is true...
...then it is suspicious on those grounds alone. Persian Gulf is pretty small and the entrance is narrow. It is not a place to cruise a carrier group without a good reason.
I hope the administration is not putting the group in harms way in hopes of attracting a "Sand Pebbles" situation. I acknowledge that my prior statement is pure, paranoid speculation.
