Hi Jeff; long time no see, glad you dropped by.

I responded indirectly, inspired by Lance's contribution; but the short answer is that there's reason for hope that the situation can be improved if the public is given more opportunities to get involved. I do believe that the key to the problem is just that science and space exploration are so inaccessible to the public, and if there were fewer barriers to participation, more people would show an interest.
