Hello, Buck.
A couple of thoughts. First, what is so sacred about human civilization? Given the varied and vast Universe which we inhabit, Mankind seems to be a very small part, and not particularly essential to the workings. If Mankind disappeared next week, would the Universe even notice? Would it alter the course of any event away from this Earth?
Each of us dies. We disappear. The Universe is gone, for us. And yet everything goes on, and on and on, with only a few of the higher mammals closest to us noticing, and that not for very long. I think the individual in this case can stand for the species.
I do think that while we're here we probably need to take care of things as much as possible, and devote resources to the more immediate or known threats to our existence. Mankind is the only animal capable of making the world a better place for all, or most, and we're failing miserably at that.
