Limbaugh's role is that of lightning rod, he makes the intial recon and takes the casualties, but he is the first line of defense for his position. The result is to divert the discussion away from the issue and thrust it onto the messenger. Like the "D-Florida" label on the Fox News Foley graphic, it momentarily puts the attention on the controversy and deflects it from the issue. If he has to back-pedal and apologize later, no matter, the damage is done and the initial effect partially neutralized. His partisans will not be moved against him, no matter what the outrage, and his opponents will be momentarily dazzled and lose focus. A good defense against this tactic is exactly what his critics are deploying: self-righteous indignation, but even that is not fully effective. As we can see, we are all talking about Rush now, not medicine or public policy.
The best way to counter a Limbaugh is to use his own tactics against him, to focus on his erectile inadequacies and his psychotropic appetites. It may not have anything to do with the issues, but that's the whole point of propaganda, isn't it? In a way, I take some pride and comfort in knowing the Left is not as skilled at these tactics as the Right is.
