The gerbil merchant

Limbaugh is a classic propagandist, but also a highly specialized one. As a student of the art I am in awe of him. Like Ann Coulter, his task is not to make his opponents change their minds, or to persuade those in the middle. The former won't, no matter what they're told, and the latter are more likely to be offended than anything else. His strategy is to reinforce the belief of his own partisans and his message is targeted directly at them. The other side have his equivalent too: Michael Moore, Al Sharpton, and their ilk, but they can't touch our man Rush.

He is definitely not an ass. He is a brilliant propagandist and in this case he has managed to blunt the message of what might otherwise be a very sympathetic voice speaking directly at his target audience. The fact that everyone else is outraged is only a bonus as far as his followers are concerned. For them, humiliating and insulting an opponent is better than just discrediting him. The more thoughtful and decent components on the Right may disagree with him, but they are not likely to object to his antics because even though they are somewhat embarassed by him, they recognize his power and effectiveness.

Limbaugh is the equivalent of the penal batallions that lead the charge across No Man's Land in order to clear the minefields. That's penal, not penile.
