There are no 'menial' laborers - there are only laborers.

That's an elitist, leftist conceptualization used to exploit folks and divide them.

They shouldn't have enlisted if they don't like dangerous, potentially deadly, jobs. There are lots of folks who enlist and regret it. There are probably 40,000 more where those came from. Every company has more than their fair share of complainers, why should the military be any different?

I am of the mindset that we should discharge folks who want to split early. It does an army no good if they have a bunch of crybabies/complainers in a unit. Don't even bother with a dishonorable discharge - just discharge them with proportionately limited/reduced veterans benefits if they want to split before their term is up after say at least six months of service in theater.

With such an option we would attract folks who want to join, and also quickly discard those who don't want to be there. Phase-out burnouts and make serving more attractive to those who are fence-sitters.

It's already good we don't use the draft, even though it might provide more intelligent soldiers. It's more important to have folks who want to be there than smart folks who can't stop thinking of when they're splitting.
