I still firmly believe that a diploamtic solution was stymied by France, Russia, and Germany's refusal to stand firmly against the interests of their Iraqi contracts.
Why should I answer such an absurd argument? Those countries were not against sanctions against Iraq before the war and why should a country protect the interests of private companies when the whole world knows there are sanctions in the first place?
I believe the threat of civil war is real.
Perhaps, but as soon as there is a leader, there will be order. Because he'd have the army.
Saddam did use gas against the Kurds but that was because he felt threatened and he had WMDs.
Now we know there are no more WMDs and any new strongman (or of course much better, a democratically elected leader) would not be threatened by a previously ongoing civil war.
