...Gerry Ford was a moderate Republican. You're right, Bush is nothing like Ford.
You know that the modern GOP wouldn't give him the time of day because of his moderate position. The Party wouldn't let him run for dogcatcher unless he started foaming at the mouth with rage, and pledged his undying devotion to the religious extremists on the Right.
All of which reflects badly on the Republican Party, and makes Ford look better by comparison. I think that if my ouija board could connect to Gerry Ford, he'd say that he didn't leave the Republican Party, the Party left him.
Look around this thread, and see who's being respectful toward the deceased, and who's just jumping on another excuse to spew some bile. They don't make Republicans like they used to. More's the pity.
Gerald R. Ford was 93 years old, and so his passing is more poignant than sad. He's the only person to be both Vice President and President without being elected to either office. But perhaps what's most remarkable about Gerry Ford is that, unlike other Presidents, whom people either loved or hated, we all just sorta liked Gerry and found him easy on the nerves after so many years of political strife. He did right by the country, he knew it and we knew it, and history will be kind to him.
We could use another Gerald Ford right now.
