And I recall quite well the contempt and amused condescension in which he was held.

As with Reagan, the sudden rewriting of history to show how loved he was is a bit disconcerting.

Somehow, I suspect you didn't have that high of an opinion of him when he was in office. Or is this another hindsight revelation like with Goldwater and Reagan?
