re: 'Global Warming Is Lies' Claims Documentary

Some responses.

"I would like to take this opportunity to discuss whether you think rising global CO2 levels will have a significant affect upon global temperatures."

Yes, probably around 2 degrees C by 2050 and around 3 degrees C by 2100, if we stabilise atmospheric greenhouse gases (carbon dioxied equivalent) at around 550 parts per million above late pre-industrial values (we're currently at 379 pp, CO2 and around 425 ppm equivalent CO2 taking all greenhouse gases into account). 550 ppm is seen as realistic but very optimistic by many politicians and policy makers, given current emissions trends. Of course there is uncertainty with the temperature estimates here, but less than there was a few years ago. These are the latest "best estimates" from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - before they only provided ranges. It's thought that the majority of the recent warming (now put at 0.74 degrees in the latest IPCC report) is due to human-induced increases in greenhouse gases, with a very small amount (don't have figure to hand) due to solar variability. You can check out the Summary for Policymakers of the latest report by downloading it at www.ipcc.ch. The figures should be in there.

"I think the fact that some people involved in this project could have been members of Revolutionary Communists, is interesting, but it's not by itself discrediting".

This is relevant because the ex-RCs have an ideological agenda that involves destroying what they refer to as "the environmental movement" and opposing any regulation done in the name of environmental protection. They have a history of this sort of anti-environment, anti-science propaganda.

"I would interested if there was anything in the show you found to be incorrect or vastly improbable."

Pretty much all of it. Too much to go into here, but if you go to my blog at nickbrooks.wordpress.com you will find a link to the documentary microsite on the Channel 4 website, where you can see the main arguments. You will also find a link to www.realclimate.org, a website set up by climate scientists (not me) to answer the pseudo-science of the climate sceptics.

Hope this helps. Sorry not to put in more detail, but responding to these sorts of programmes could be a full time job, and there are plenty of answers out there already.

All the best
