As I have often mentioned, there are plenty of reasons to try and get away from burning "fossil fuels" for energy, even if they emitted no CO2 at all. The geopolitical crap oil puts us through, and its value as stock for the thousands of things made from petrochemicals, are just two of them.
My problem has been with the apocalyptic rhetoric on the subject. Politicians and others with an apocalypse view tend to fly off the handle and make the problem worse with emotional and poorly-thought out solutions.
If I were talking about the War on Terror in the previous paragraph, you'd accept the concept instantly. It's funny to see liberals and conservatives each going at each other with their own version of Why We're Doomed And You Have To Let Us Run Things. I'm well aware I've done it myself, but I do try to be objective about the whole thing.
I am tracking energy and transportation technology closely in a LOT of areas. Sometimes I post one or two things I've found. Without going into specifics, there are a lot of places where the tech is approaching a market tipping point, kind of like the one where only the rich had portable phones, then you turned around one day and even school kids had their own cell phones. Solar is one. A decent electric car is another. There are others. Solutions are being developed in a lot of areas, in a lot of ways. They'll add up.
I do wish the U.S. would come up with a way to move forward on nuclear power, though. That still seems to be stuck in place.
If you don't need a new car right away, I'd hold off for about five years. My hunch is that the electrics are going to be big in the next decade, especially if someone is bright enough to put a "cruise" gasoline generator in one to make a true hybrid out of it.
