I have a better idea.

The US should simply withdraw from Iraq, which will precipitate a Sunni/Shia, Arab/Iranian
full regional conflict which will completely absorb the belligerent energies of all the current participants for the indefinite future. No doubt the US will be blamed for "contributing to instability in the region", but it is being blamed for that now anyway, and will continue to be blamed for that no matter what it does.

I don't think the American administration realizes that it's most persuasive bargaining chip is simply to refuse to play at all. Without America to blame for their problems, the middle eastern states will have to resolve them themselves. I'd be willing to bet that within a year they'd be begging us to come back in. Even better, maybe the European Union would step in and sort out the mess. Right now, it appears their primary motivation is to see the Americans continue to shoot themselves in the foot. The EU needs mideast oil more than the US does, let Brussels try world leadership for a while.

As the last remaining superpower, America can finally afford the luxury of isolationism.
