Your title deserves to be in Flame Scott and is beneath you. Of course I and probably any other person that has the bravery to face a possible death sentence for wartime desertion would be noble enough to stand up for someone they loved and give their life for them.
It appears as if this man believes is that his act is a step towards bringing less danger to the people he loves. If one believes honestly that engaging in an unjust war and committing atrocious acts creates more danger for his country and family then it would make sense that the bravest thing the man could do would be refuse to take part in it.
Most people live in horror of being audited by the IRS. Just imagine giving the US government the type of power over you that a desertion charge can bring. I can't imagine it's an easy step. Facing the enemy is probably safer.
